Last Week !!!

I am so excited because this is my last week of school. I feel a bitter sweet feeling. I can not believe that I have completed my first year of college. It seems like it was just yesterday when I first moved into Richard Bland.  I have had my good days and bad days here. I am really going to miss the friends I have made here. Sadly some will not be coming back next year. My focus this week is to study for my finals. Hopefully Saturday I will have  my belongings packed and ready to move out. 

Monday I took my psychology final. Today I turned in my english portfolio. Tomorrow I have my math final and Thursday I take my geography final. I received a 73 on my psychology final. I wish I could have done better but I can say that I tried my best. My english portfolio I put a lot of time and effort into it so hopefully I can receive an A for it. My math final should be a piece of cake, however, I am worried about my geography final. Geography has not always been my best subject so wish me luck! 

My Career Goals

Reflecting back on my childhood, I always had a vivid imagination. I never really knew what I wanted to become when I got older, but I always had very high aspirations for myself. As I have gotten older I see myself having a career that involved making a difference in society as a social worker. I always received great satisfaction from listening to people’s problems and helping to find solutions. I want to dedicate my life to ensuring that children are raised in a safe, nurturing, and loving environment. I want to help children achieve their goals in order to become productive adults in society one day. 

The steps that I am taking to make this dream a reality is by attending The Richard Bland College of William & Mary. I plan to be here for two years to receive an associates degree of science. There after, I plan to transfer to either Old Dominion University or Christopher Newport for an additional two years to receive my bachelors degree in social work. I want to work in a big city where I know I can make a difference and change someones life.

My RBC Experience

My Richard Bland experience thus far has been better than I expected it to be. I have had many professors that love what they do and try their best to make sure that I learn the material that they teach me. I have met what I believe to be life long friends. My grades for my first semester were good but of course could have been better. My first semester I got an A, two B's, and two C's. 

Next year I look forward to it being my last year at Richard Bland so that I can move on to my next institution. I want to come next semester trying to improve my GPA. I want to leave Richard Bland with a 3.5. 

What I could do better as of next year is waking up on time and not missing class as well as doing my homework on time. If I need help with an assignments I am going to go to my professors because that is what they are here for, to help.

I want to leave Richard Bland knowing that I did my best and that I did not waste my parents money because we all know how important that is to everyone. 

RBC vs. TCC

Last week the Richard Bland Statesmen played their last home game of the season against Tidewater Community College. The final score for the Richard Bland Statesmen was 99 to Tidewater Community College 73.  I commend all the boys on a job well done. They have had a amazing season this year and I look forward to what they may bring to the court next year!

Spring Break !!!

Spring break is here! It starts March the 7th and ends March the 16th. We have been waiting for this break for quite some time now. To me it means a break away from school and all the chaos that comes along with it such as homework, teachers, and DRAMA. I have been missing my family and friends from back home. It don't look as if I am going to be able to go to the beach like I planned because of this weather we have been getting each week. When we come back from Spring Break I can just imagine all the work we gone have to do. O well! The only thing that is going to be on my mind is that I have just completed my first year of college!!!

Snow' Snow' and more snow'

This year has been a year like never before. It is March and we have weather as if it was December. For the past few weeks we have had snow storm after snow storm giving us one to two days at a time out of school each week. I can not remember the last time it has snowed liked this. According to the weather forecast we are going to get a rain storm with a mixture of sleet and it is a possibility that we are expecting more snow next week. Yes i am more than happy to get a day or so out of school but I am not alright with it being cold every week and having to decide whether or not I want to walk to class in the cold.  I am ready to say good bye to Winter and Hello to Spring!

Today in class we discussed our 2nd essay that is due when we come back from Spring Break. This essay has to consist of 700+ words. This essay has to be on one of these topics: The Memory and its importance of The Glass Menagerie, a thematic or character comparison with a story we have read, an in-depth character analysis of Tom, Laura, or Amanda from The Glass Menagerie, Escape in The Glass Menagerie, or s symbol from The Glass Menagerie. During our class discussion we talked about a few symbols and the way each character escapes in the story such as Tom using the movie theater as his escape or the title of the story The Glass Menagerie symbolizing how each character is fragile in some way. We also discussed how we believe that the father being absent in his children as well as his wife's life has had an impact on them all. Amanda is so overbearing when it comes to her children and I believe the reason for that is because she is lonely and bitter and because she does not have that significant other. Her kids are all that she has. She is also very consistent on finding her daughter Laura a man and I believe that is because she does not want her daughter to grow old, single, and bitter like her. Laura is a very shy girl. I believe she is missing that father figure to show her that she is loved and Tom on the other hand looks up to his father and wants to be just like him.

Sweeny's Class

This is my first time taking Sweeney's class since being at Richard Bland. Being a freshmen I had no idea what teachers were good from bad. Their was a lot of talk of a man named Sweeney and I just knew that I had to have him as my teacher. So far I am proud of my decision of deciding to take his class. He tries to use teaching strategies that he feel will relate to his students and that will get us involved in his lectures. To anyone who is trying to figure out next year what English teacher is for them take Sweeney! :) This semester we have started to read stories and discuss the stories as a class, watch plays, and write a few papers. The typical things that happen in English class.

My Favorite Story

This week in class we read three stories, How to Become a Writer, The Lone Ranger and Tonto Fistfight in Heaven, and The Yellow Wallpaper. Out of the three I found The Yellow Wallpaper the most interesting!

The Yellow Wallpaper was written around 1890 by Charlotte Perkins Gilman. This story is about a woman who is battling with nervous depression. She is married to a man named John who is her doctor. Her treatment to get over her sickness requires that she does nothing active, especially writing which she loves the most to do. She feels that activity, freedom, and interesting work would help her condition and reveals that she has begun a secret journal in order to “relieve her mind.” Her husband John belittles her about her illness as well as her thoughts. Her husband locks her away in a room with yellow wallpapers in an attempt to make her better. She becomes disturbed by this wallpaper. She describes it as "revolting." She eventually turns to the yellow wallpaper as an escape goat for writing. What started off as something horrible turns into her obsession.

This story was very weird but at the same time interesting! I would suggest to anyone who has not read it to read it.
